Wentworth Pass Track: Hiking in the Blue Mountains

During our stay in Australia, we set off early from Sydney to discover one of the most spectacular hiking areas in New South Wales: the Blue Mountains. Our destination for the day was the Wentworth Pass Track at Wentworth Falls, a demanding but beautiful hike combining waterfalls, sandstone cliffs and lush forest.

This hike took place on 6 February 2013 and reflects the conditions and trail layout at that time.

From Sydney to Wentworth Falls

We were up at dawn in Sydney and left the city at around 6:00 a.m., heading west towards the Blue Mountains.

After a short stop to meet Danie and Marcel, we continued along the M4 towards Penrith before climbing into the mountains and reaching Wentworth Falls.

By 8:30 a.m. we were at Conservation Hut, ready to begin our hike.

Choosing the Wentworth Pass Track

Following the advice of Danie and Marcel, we chose the longer route descending below the cliffs via the Wentworth Pass Track.

It turned out to be an excellent choice. The scenery was outstanding from the very beginning, although the route was physically demanding. The trail descends steeply below the escarpment and includes numerous steps, ladders and steep sections.

Waterfalls and spectacular views

The first part of the hike led us progressively down into the valley. Along the way, we enjoyed superb views of the waterfalls cascading from the sandstone cliffs.

The contrast between the cliffs, the waterfalls and the deep valley below makes this part of the Blue Mountains particularly impressive.

Through the forest below the cliffs

Once below the escarpment, the landscape changed completely. We continued through a beautiful forest at the foot of the towering sandstone cliffs.

After the exposed viewpoints above, walking beneath the dense vegetation created a completely different atmosphere.

At the base of Wentworth Falls

One of the highlights of the hike was reaching the lower part of Wentworth Falls. From the valley floor, the scale of the waterfall and the surrounding cliffs is particularly impressive.

From there, it was time to start climbing again. The return involved a demanding ascent using a succession of steep steps and ladders before eventually reconnecting with the Overcliff Track.

Back to Conservation Hut

We returned to our starting point at around 1:30 p.m., after approximately five hours of hiking.

According to our records from the day, the route covered approximately 13 km with around 605 metres of elevation gain.

A memorable hike in the Blue Mountains

The Wentworth Pass Track was one of the highlights of our time in the Blue Mountains. The combination of waterfalls, dramatic cliffs, forest and steep mountain trails made it a particularly memorable hike.

The route was demanding in places, especially during the descent and the climb back towards the escarpment, but the scenery more than rewarded the effort.

A big thank you to Danie and Marcel for introducing us to this beautiful hike.
