At 262 metres above sea level, Pic N’Ga is the highest point on the Isle of Pines.
The climb is relatively short, but steep enough to get the legs working. At the summit, the effort is rewarded with a magnificent 360° panorama over Kunié, its bays, lagoon and columnar pines.
It is a great hike for anyone wanting to gain some height and discover a different side of the Isle of Pines, away from its famous beaches.

Pic N’Ga, the highest point on the Isle of Pines
Located in the southern part of the island, not far from Kuto and Kanumera bays, Pic N’Ga rises to 262 metres above Kunié.
The altitude may seem modest, but the summit stands well above the relatively low landscape of the Isle of Pines.
On a clear day, the view stretches across the lagoon, the surrounding bays and the distinctive landscapes of the island.

Our hike to Pic N’Ga
- Elevation: 262 m
- Distance during our hike: about 3 km from our starting point
- Distance from Kuto Beach: about 5 km
- Elevation gain: about 270 m
- Time: around 2 hours return, including photo stops
- Participant: Henri
- Date: January 31
The route is short, but the climb should not be underestimated. Most of the elevation gain is concentrated over a relatively short distance.
From dry forest to the ridge
The trail begins beneath relatively dense and shady vegetation, typical of the dry forest found in this part of the Isle of Pines.
This first section is pleasant and gives you a chance to warm up before the gradient becomes noticeably steeper.
As the trail gradually leaves the forest, it reaches a small ridge where the path becomes steeper and rockier. The vegetation opens up and the surrounding landscape slowly comes into view.
A short but fairly steep climb
The main challenge of Pic N’Ga is not the distance, but the gradient.
The climb is quite direct and the heat can quickly become noticeable, especially when the trail is exposed to the sun. It is therefore best to carry enough water and, if possible, avoid the hottest part of the day.
Several short breaks along the way already provide beautiful views before reaching the summit.
A 360° panorama over the Isle of Pines
The real highlight of the hike is, of course, reaching the summit.
From the top of Pic N’Ga, the view extends across a large part of the Isle of Pines and its vast lagoon.
The shades of blue in the lagoon, the vegetation, the red earth and the distinctive silhouettes of the columnar pines create a spectacular landscape.
It is also the perfect place to take a longer break and spend some time taking photos before starting the descent.
A must-do hike on Kunié
The Isle of Pines is best known for its beaches, bays and lagoon, but climbing Pic N’Ga offers a very different perspective on the island.
In just a couple of hours, the hike combines dry forest, a moderately demanding climb and one of the finest panoramic viewpoints on Kunié.
Our favourite part: the 360° view from the summit.
Current information about the Pic N’Ga trail
Since our hike, the trail has been developed and access conditions may have changed.
The current official route is approximately 5 km return and takes around 1 hour 45 minutes. It begins in dry forest before becoming steeper as it approaches the summit.
The trail crosses customary land, so visitors should respect the site, local customs and any access instructions in place at the time of their visit.
As parts of the trail can be rocky, proper walking shoes are recommended, along with enough drinking water. Dry weather conditions are also preferable for the hike.
